Look, my parents were mad scientists who pumped me full of spider-juice just to see what would happen. I went to Hail Hydra high school and Nick Fury university. I've been extraordinary my entire life. After all these years of insanity... a little ordinary sounds pretty #$%^ great. You have your normal... and I have mine.
“Not that I don’t mind helping you fix the coffee pot,” Daisy paused for a moment, unsure how to phrase what she was trying to say. “I just kind of feel like the resident IT person recently. And I honestly don’t know how those things work. If you need me to hack into a server or something, I’m your girl.”
“If Tony were alive, I would go to him. Hell, I would go to Bruce if he was here. Doc’s always been my go-to.” She needed to check in on him, actually. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to make you feel like the tech person. It’s just that Gerry’s decided he doesn’t want to sleep anymore and I didn’t have time to run home.” Roger definitely had a pot brewing at all times.
As much as Luna wanted to pretend like she understood the reference, she couldn’t hide her face of utter confusion and unamusement. Any onlookers might even say she resembled her mother in that moment as she paused and tried to offer a smile at the thought of some frozen tacos. At this point, she’d take what she could get. “As long as it’s edible I think I’ll be okay.” She sat, waiting for the woman to start cooking them for her.
“Geez. Tough crowd.” Jess paused a second, making awkward eye contact with the still seated girl. “–Do you know where the fridge is? It’s the big white thing that’s currently running. Not that fast, though. You’ll be able to catch it.” God, that joke was rough. She had been around Clint too much.
“I don’t know if I should be more irritated that S.H.I.E.L.D. imprisoned A.I.M. property or mad that I didn’t come up with it first. It’s infuriatingly genius.”
“A.I.M. isn’t still contracting with H.Y.D.R.A., is it?”
“Mess with your friends?” Zemo raised an eyebrow, thinking for a moment before realizing she had to be referring to the man once known as the Winter Soldier, “Ah, yes. James. Well, I can assure you - those days are over. I’m a changed man.”
“Sam Wilson’s also a pretty good friend and he left you a less stunning review.” Jessica regarded him warily. “People change. I get that. I changed. Dropped H.Y.D.R.A. and all of that. But you? You’re giving me weird vibes.”
“The Hellfire Gala’s gonna be so fun, right? I’m think the food is what I’m most excited for. I hope they have the little lamb skewers. Oooh! Or little miniature cheesecakes!” Alright, so maybe Gabby was deflecting, but she couldn’t help it. It was a lot easier to talk about something like food opposed to her anxieties about Laura and the Vault. Or what the New Mutants were up to.
“Listen, you never have to sell me on a party. I’m just glad to have gotten an invite.”
“I’ve never been so thankful for opposable thumbs.”
“And I’ve never been so thankful for you.” Jessica knew she had checked out before he had been kidnapped. She had been inattentive and preoccupied. She had always expected Roger to be there, and when he wasn’t she had no idea what to do. All she knew was that she had been scared. Carefully holding out his mug of coffee, Jess kissed him on the cheek before settling down next to him. “And I’m also thankful I don’t remember my short tenure as a literal arachnid.”
“Not that I’m aware of?” Joaquin shrugged, eying the woman warily, “And who are you exactly? Not that the whole friend of a friend of a friend thing isn’t believable, I’m just a bit less trusting than that.”
“Who am I? Who am —” Jess blinked in surprised. “Jessica Drew? Spider-Woman? Would you recognize me if I slapped on the good ol’ red red spandex and showed you my ass?” She would always be salty that it was her top Google image. “Look, Captain Marvel’s my best friend and I’m a card carrying Avenger. Who are you?”
“If you have to brace yourself against the wall when you stand back up then you’re old.” he matched her smile. “You gotta keep things interesting to stay sane. Maybe I should think about kids too.”
“Shit. I may have a problem then.” Jessica laughed. “But it could also be because I routinely get my ass handed to me.” She was good at her job, she just had a penchant for never knowing when to quit. His next comment took her off guard. “You, kids?” She blinked in surprise. “They’re rewarding but they’re also a huge responsibility. Didn’t Kate take your dog?”
Cassie lit up when she realized this lady knew her dad as she nodded and held up the McDonalds. “I’m actually surprising him with some food. He hasn’t really spent much time at the hotel recently which means he’s probably pretty focused on whatever all of this is. Which also means he probably hasn’t eaten in awhile.” Cassie and her father traveled over to New Jersey once her dad got the call that they needed some help, and she’d been hanging around with him since. Or more recently by herself while she waited for him to get finished. “Yeah, I can kinda tell.” She commented as her eyes slowly drifted over towards the giant red barrier that wasn’t too far away from the base. It was huge, and she still couldn’t believe that there was someone powerful enough to do all of that. “Nice suit, by the way.”
“He ate all the powdered sugar donuts. All that was left was the custard filled ones.” Which meant Jess had abstained and drank cold, watery coffee. The nice thing about living with Roger was that he was a human garbage disposal. He ate whatever was left or Jess didn’t want. “But, I’m sure he’ll love something hot that isn’t stale. One would think S.W.O.R.D. could spring to feed their agents, but I suppose the priority is combatting terrorism at the moment.” Not that it was easy to think of Wanda as a terrorist. She and Jessica weren’t super close but they had ran in the same circles for quite some time now. Maybe there was something else going on, something they didn’t know. Jessica could only hope so. “Yeah?” She turned slightly to glance at the back of it. “Trying something new out. I made the mistake of googling myself once and I’m still suffering as a result.”
“Wouldn’t be you if you weren’t.” The smile Carol wore was fond. “And wasn’t it you who told me not to make my life all about work? I’m just following your advice.”
“Actually, I’m glad we’re talking about this. Sam. Your boyfriend. Who you love. I was smashed at the Inhuman shindig but I remember your confession.”
